A NYC RESOURCE: THE IMPACT OF THE DAIDO MORIYAMA PHOTOBOOK COLLECTION ON ICP

In November 2011, Daido Moriyama came to New York for a series of events: a talk at Japan Society with International Center of Photography Curator Christopher Phillips, and Printing Show –TKY, a photobook performance event organized by Ivan Vartanian at the Aperture Foundation. During that time, a plan was hatched for a Daido Moriyama photobook collection at the ICP Library. Christopher Phillips, Deirdre Donohue of the ICP Library and Ivan Vartanian were the main masterminds behind its inception. Over the course of the next six months, books were amassed with the help of the Daido Moriyama Foundation and Akio Nagasawa. In May 2012, Moriyama returned to New York to receive the International Center of Photography Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement. There were several other Moriyama events that also occurred: A book signing for a limited edition publication called Color and the first ever Daido Moriyama Pop-Up Library at the ICP Library. New York City was “Moriyama-crazy.”

The Pop-Up Library, held on May 1, 2012, was the beginning of what is now known at the Daido Moriyama Photobook Collection at the ICP Library. Over 40 Moriyama photobooks were donated to the library that evening. ICP is fortunate to have this incredible resource within its community – its importance very much tied to its role within a diverse community of photographers, students, teachers, curators, collectors, patrons and researchers. In late October 2013, Matthew Carson and I were invited to the Fotobook Festival in Kassel, Germany to discuss the collection’s impact on the ICP community (and beyond). We determined that the best way to share its value as an influence, teaching tool and research resource was to interview several of those in the ICP community who were involved in the collection’s inception, as well as those who encounter the books through their visits to the ICP Library. Below is an edited version of several of the video interviews from our lecture, “A New York City Resource: Moriyama at the ICP Library.”
(Videography by: Elizabeth Sales and Mathieu Asselin.)

The collection’s impact on the ICP community

Stephanie Shuman Librarian Deirdre Donohue speaks about the impact of the Moriyama collection on the ICP community.

Connecting ICP to collectors

The collection has also been a catalyst for the library’s connection to patrons and collectors. David Solo, who as a member of the Friends of the Library Committee has been instrumental in supporting the ICP Library’s interest in Asian photography, shares his impressions of Moriyama’s influence as a bookmaker.

Some favorite Moriyama photobooks in the ICP collection

We also asked those we interviewed to tell us about their favorite Moriyama photobooks in the collection. Below are comments from several of the students, staff members and library supporters at the ICP on how the books in the Daido Moriyama collection have influenced them. Here, Bill Ellis, a general studies graduate from 2013 talks about his attraction to Moriyama’s Nagisa (2010).

Deirdre Donohue talks about ’71-NY (2002), a book that has resonated with a number of students and faculty members in the ICP community.

Mike Fernandez, a recent photojournalism graduate is an example of a student strongly influenced by ’71-NY (2002).

Daido Moriyama, '71-NY (2002)

Daido Moriyama, ’71-NY (2002)

Dave Solo discusses his favorite: Hikari to Kage / Light and Shadow (1982, Kodansha reprint 2009). The ICP Library doesn’t have the original 1982 edition, but it does have the 2012 Kodansha reprint.

Bye-Bye Photography or Farewell Photography (1972, Powershovel reprint 2006, Kodansha reprint 2012) has left a great impression on many. Christopher Phillips discusses its importance to him as a teacher and a curator.

And finally, Eneida Cardona, an Educational Assistant and artist in the administrative offices at the ICP discusses her attraction to Bye-Bye Photography (Powershovel reprint 2006).
